Today is Monday, December 8th, 2008; Karen's Korner #1461

My mom received a book from a friend for her 90th birthday, titled "Let's Roll!" written by Lisa Beamer. Her husband, Todd, was one of heroes who helped bring down the hijacked airplane into a field in Pennsylvania, rather than the terrorist destination of some building in Washington D.C.

In one of the final chapters of the book, Lisa had these comments which she spoke at that year's national prayer breakfast (in part):

"Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint."
- Isaiah 40:30 -31

"I told the group about seeing a hawk soaring above the crash site (when she and some relatives of those who lost their lives in the plane crash wen to visit it for the first time) in Pennsylvania, and how God's peace had swept over me with the promise that for those who trust in him, he would renew their strength. 'The peace that came even at that place in my life was because of my hope in the Lord. The difference between those who stumble and those who run is only the action of hoping in the Lord.'"

Beamer told the story of two men who built new houses - one on the rock and one on the sand. When the storm came, the house on the sand fell with a great crash. "The two houses were constructed of similar materials," she said, "and weathered similar storms, but the difference in the outcomes was based on the foundations, the core."

"If you live long enough, you're bound to encounter some rough storms. No one is immune to tragedy in this life. The house is the same, the storm is the same, but what makes the difference is the foundation. Todd's foundation was securely built on his relationship with Jesus Christ. When everything in his life was shaken, his foundation remained sound. The question each of us must answer, sooner or later, is this:  How secure is the foundation on which I'm bulding my life?"

Good words from Lisa for any of us facing storms in our lives this Christmas season.
