Today is Monday, November 4th, 2013; Karen's Korner #2686

Yesterday at Sunday School, we spent some time together looking at God as our Rock. Among other things, we took a look at about a dozen verses in Psalms with David mentioning that 'Rock" formation.

Then we moved on to Peter who was one of Jesus' disciples. He didn't exactly travel in a straight line of always doing the 'right' thing:  often choosing things without thinking~~tried walking on water like Jesus did; when Jesus was being arrested for crucifixion, it was Peter who drew a sword and cut off the ear of one of those arresting Jesus; and he told Jesus' he would never deny Him but did three times in the heat of the arrest battle.

Despite all of that, Jesus said, "You are Peter, a stone, and upon this rock I will build my church......." (Matthew 16:18). How could that be?

And in I Peter, Peter writes the same about us. In the mid-section of chapter 2, the heading states "Living building stones for God's house" (in part). Like Peter, we are 'God's stones'. He always sees what 'can be', not necessarily 'what is'.:

" .... you have been chosen by God Himself--
you are priests of the King,
you are holy and pure,
you are God's very own--
all this so that you may show to others
how God called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light.
Once you were less than nothing;
now you are God's own.
Once you knew very little of God's kindness;
now your very lives have been changed by it."
~ I Peter 2:9,10 LB

Bible Commentary:   "People often base their self-concept on their accomplishments, but who we are in Christ is far more important than our jobs, our successes, our wealth, or our knowledge. We have been chosen by God as His very own, and we have been called to represent Him to others. Remember that your values come from being one of God's children, not from what you can achieve. You have worth because of what God does, not because what you do.
