Printable Issue 4901  Today is Monday, July 3rd, 2023; Karen's Korner #4901
Duane Wilson chose this reading for our communion meditation at church yesterday. It was written by Jerry Starling; Duane added a few edits, as have i:

SET FREE -- LIVE FREE!

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Stand firm, then,
and do not let yourselves be
burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

~ Galatians 5:1

"Two hundred forty-seven years ago, the Fathers of this country signed the Declaration of Independence from England. They determined to 'live free or die.'

"Tw
o millinea ago, Jesus said that if you will continue in His word, you will 'know the truth, and the truth will set you free' (John 8:32).

Political freedom is one thing; freedom is Jesus is something else, even though we sometimes get the two confused.

"Jesus sets us free from the power, the penalty, and -- to the extent we truly follow Him -- even the practice of sin.

"His life, death, and resurrection give the ultimate Truth. He Himself is the Truth that sets us free, Without Him, we would still be in slavery to our lusts and selfish desires.

"Therefore, Paul said, I should not allow myself to be yoked with slavery.

"What can enslave us?  It could be law, as in the context of Galatians chapter 4. It could be inner-heart passions. It could be traditions and opinions. It could be addictive substances or behavior. It, in short, could be anything that makes us committed to something other than Jesus."

"We need to renew our pledge of loyalty to Jesus and to Jesus alone. We need to truly listen to His Word so we can walk in it -- and be free."

Printable Issue 4902  Today is Tuesday, July 4th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4902
Happy 4th of July!

Something written for today by Sarah Young and her "Jesus Calling:  Enjoying Peace in His Presence":

"When you worship Me in spirit and truth, you join with choirs of angels who are continually before My throne. Though you cannot hear their voices, your praise and thanksgiving are distinctly audible in heaven. Your petitions are also heard, but it is your gratitude that clears the way to My Heart. With the way between us wide open, My blessings fall upon you in rich abundance. The greatest blessings is nearness to Me----abundant Joy and Peace in My Presence. Practice praising and thanking my continually throughout this day."

~ Taken from John 4:23 - 24; Psalm 100:4

Printable Issue 4903  Today is Wednesday, July 5th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4903
"What a foundation you stand on now;
the apostles and the prophets;
and the cornerstone of the building is Jesus Christ himself!
We who believe are carefully joined together with Christ as parts of a beautiful,
constantly growing temple
for God."

~ Ephesians 2:20 & 21 LAB

*
Bible Commentary:   "A church building is sometimes called God's house. in reality, God's house is not a building, but a group of people. He lives in us and shows himself to a watching world through us. People can see that God is love and that Jesus is Lord as we live in harmony with each other and with what God says in his Word.

"What does it mean to stand on the foundation of the apostles and prophets? It means that the church is not  a built on modern ideas, but rather on the spiritual heritage given to us in the Old and New Testaments."

Printable Issue 4905  Today is Friday, July 7th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4905
Yesterday's Max Lucado to take us into the weekend.

YOU CAN TRUST GOD

"God has never rendered a wrong decision, experienced the wrong attitude, taken the wrong path, said the wrong thing, or acted the wrong way. He has always been and always will be right. He is righteous. And he has complete sovereignty over his creation. Sovereignty is how the Bible describes God’s perfect control and management of the universe. He is continually involved with all created things, especially the lives of his beloved children.

"Anxiety is often the consequence of perceived chaos. But God’s righteousness, combined with his sovereignty, add up to this fact:  we can trust him, his decisions, and his ability to see us through our fears. Remember this: 'Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you'  (Psalm 9:10 NIV).

Printable Issue 4906  Today is Monday, July 10th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4906
Our local church camp always has a theme for the camping year. This year it is 1 Peter 2:9 & 10 - WE ARE CHOSEN.

Because our minster was a camp director for one week and returned later to be the guest minster for another week, he wrote and delivered some sermons on those verses. And he is sharing them with us for several weeks.

"For you have been chosen by God himself---you are priests of the King, you are holy and pure, you are God's very own----all this is so that you may show to others how God called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were less than nothing; now you are God's own. Once you knew very little of God's kindness; now your very lives have been changed by it."

~ 1 Peter 2:9 & 10 LAB
*
Bible Commentary:  "People often base their self-concept on their accomplishments, but who we are in Christ is far more important than our jobs, our successes, our wealth, or our knowledge. We have been chosen by God as his very own, and we have been called to represent him to others. Remember that our value comes from being one of God's children, not from what we can achieve. We have worth because of what God does, not because of what we do."

Printable Issue 4908  Today is Wednesday, July 12th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4908
Every now and then I pull out "100 Things God Loves About You:  Simple Reminders for When You Need Them Most" by Tama Fortner. It never hurts to be reminded about how much God loves us!

Number 34:

God Loves To Answer Your Call

"I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain."

~ Psalm 3:4

"There's never a busy signal. No endless, unanswered ringing. No voicemail. Not with God. When you call, God answers. Every Single Time. Who else can promise that? More importantly, who can deliver that?

"God promises that when you call out to Him, He will answer. It may not be the answer you expect---it may not even by the answer you had hoped for----but it will always be the answer that is best for you. You can count on it. And you can count on Him because He always takes your call."

Printable Issue 4909  Today is Thursday, July 13th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4909
Yesterday at our weekly church prayer time, Sandy wanted us to hear the day's (July 12) entry in "365 Days of Prayer for Women" by Stephanie Sample.

It's a good one:

BELOVED CHILD

"You are altogether beautiful, my love;
there is no flaw in you."

~ Song of Solomon 4:7 NIV

"God, you make such beautiful things! I start to list them off:  babies, flowers, sunsets, birds, snow----and I realize there is no end. More beautiful than anything by far are those I love. A mother's arms, a father's hand, a child's face all leave me breathless and filled with gratitude. Thank you, Lord, for such a lovely world. I know that to those who love me, I add to its beauty. This humbles me. In the mirror I see things I'd like to change:  flaws, imperfections, and signs of age. Behind me, hands resting proudly on my shoulders, your eyes see your beautiful, beloved child. To you, I am more beautiful than the sunset. I am as lovely as a rose."

"Do you know that God see you as beautiful?'

"Oh, give thanks to the Lord,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

give thanks to the God of gods,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

Praise him who alone does mighty miracles,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

Praise him who made the heavens,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

Praise him who planted the water within the earth,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

Praise him who made the heavenly lights,

his lovingkindness continues forever.

and the moon and stars at night,

his lovingkindness continues forever."

"And we know
that all that happens to us
is working for our good
if we love God
and are fitting into his plans."

~ Roman 8:28 LAB

*
Bible Commentary:  "God works out all things ---not just isolated incidents---for our good. This does not mean that all that happens to us is good. Evil is prevalent in our fallen world, but God is able to turn it around for our long-range good. Note that God is not working to make us happy, but to fulfill his purpose. Note also that this promise is not for everybody. It can be claimed only by those who love God and are fitting into God's plans. Such people have a new perspective, a new mindset on life. They trust in God, not life's treasures; they look to their security in heaven, not on earth; they learn to accept pain and persecution on earth, not resent it, because it brings them closer to God."

Printable Issue 4912  Today is Tuesday, July 18th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4912
Dear Father God,

This morning we want to say thank You to You and Jesus for the plans You had for us from the beginning.

Thank You for sending Your Son to earth to live a life, showing us how to live. What miracles looked like. How to love and forgive.

Jesus showed us how much He loved us by being willing to be humiliated, taunted, beaten, and crucified.

And if that wasn't enough, He died and returned to heaven. But He couldn't stay there. He had to finish what He started. He had to return to earth at His resurrection.

His love for us was so great that He had to come back to get us. This love wasn't just for some of us. It was for ALL of us!

We just have to believe in Him who was sent by You!

So today we just want to stop and say, "Thank You!"

Amen.
Printable Issue 4913  Today is Wednesday, July 19th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4913
While I have Sarah Young's "Jesus Calling:  Enjoying Peace in His Presence" on my computer desk at all times, 365 days of inspirational thoughts, I confess I don't read every day.

When I look at the right day, her thoughts are always good ones. This one is from July 16th, which was Sunday this year:

"Self-pity is a slimy, bottomless pit. Once you fall in, you tend to go deeper and deeper into the mire. As you slide down those slippery walls, you are well on you way to depression, and the darkness is profound.

"Your only hope is to look up and see the Light of My Presence shining down on you. Though the Light looks dim from your perspective, deep in the pit, those rays of hope can reach you at any depth. While you focus on Me in trust, you rise ever so slowly out of the abyss of despair. Finally, you can reach up and grasp My hand. I will pull you  out into the Light again. I will gently cleanse you, washing off the clinging mire. I will cover you with My righteousness and walk with you down the path of Life."

` Psalm 40:2 -3; Psalm 42:5 (NASB); Psalm 147:11

Printable Issue 4914  Today is Thursday, July 20th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4914
As Karen's Korner readers know, I pick a book of the Bible. Read it. And then choose another one. Not necessarily a rhyme or reason for my choice.

Right now I am reading I John. Five short chapters but they seem to be really good to me.

Here is one

"Dear young friends, you belong to God and have already won your fight with those who are against Christ, because there is someone in your hearts who is stronger than any evil teacher in this wicked world."

~ I John 4;4 LAB
*

Bible Commentary:  "It is easy to be frightened by the wickedness we see all aound us. Evil is obviously much stronger than we are. John assures us,  however, that God is stronger yet. He will conquer all evil---and his Spirit lives in our hearts!"

Printable Issue 4915  Today is Saturday, July 22nd, 2023; Karen's Korner #4915
Still enjoying I John chapter 4:

"God showed how much he loved us
by sending his only Son
into this wicked world
to bring us eternal life
though his death.
In this act
we see what real love is:
It is not our love for God,
but his love for us
when he sent his Son
to satifsfy God's anger against our sins."

~ I John 4:9 & 10 LAB

*
Bible Commentary:  "Love explains 1) why God creates--because he loves, he creates people to love; 2) why God cares--because he loves them, he cares for sinful people; 3) why we are free to choose--he wants a loving response from us; 4) why Christ died -- his love for us caused him to seek a solution to the problem of sin: and why we receive eternal life--his love expresses itself to us forever."

Printable Issue 4916  Today is Monday, July 24th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4916
Today's Max Lucado in my inbox:

WHEN SEASONS CHANGE

"God dispenses life the way he manages his cosmos: through seasons. 'To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven' (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV). When it comes to the earth, we understand God’s management strategy. Nature needs winter to rest and spring to awaken. Earthly seasons don’t upset us, but unexpected personal ones certainly do.

"Heaven’s message for you is clear: when everything else changes, God’s presence never does.

"Change is not just a part of life; change is a necessary part of God’s strategy. To use us to change the world, he sometimes redirects our assignments. Mary, from peasant girl to the mother of Christ. Paul, from local rabbi to world evangelist. God may call you to a new season, but he wants you to know: you’ll never face the future without his help."

Printable Issue 4917  Today is Tuesday, July 25th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4917
Something written by Rick Robertson; with thoughts by A. W. W. Tozer (in part):

"Great is the Lord,
and greatly to be praised;
and his greatness is unsearchable."

~ Psalm 145:3 (KJV)

Here Tozer cites the following attributes of God and there are many more:

God is holy.

"Holy is the way God is. To be holy He does not conform to a standard. He is that standard. He is absolutely holy with an infinite, incomprehensible fullness of purity that is incapable f being other than it is."

God is eternal.

"The mind looks backward in time until the dim past vanishes, then turns and looks into the future until thought and imagination collapse from exhaustion, and God is at both points, unaffected by either."

God is infinite.

"When we say that God is infinite, we mean that He knows no bounds. Whatever God is and all that God is, He is without limit."

God is omnipotent.

"Since God is also infinite, whatever he has must be without limit, therefore God has limitless power. He is omnipotent."

God is omnipresent.

"God is everywhere here, close to everything, next to everyone."

God is transcendent.

"When we speak of God as transcendent, we mean of course that He is exalted far above the created universe, so far above that human thought cannot imagine it."

"And we rebelled against this God; instead of casting us away forever, He sent His one and only Son to die as a sacrifice for our rebellion, our sin. As Christians, you and I live each day under the banner of this God's love, not His wrath."

Printable Issue 4918  Today is Wednesday, July 26th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4918
"God has given each of you
some special abilities;
be sure to use them to help each other,
passing on to others G
od's many kinds of blessings.
Are you called to preach?
Then preach as though God himself
were speaking through you.
Are you called to help others?
Do it with all the strength and energy
that God supplies,
so that God will be glorified
through Jesus Christ---
to him be glory and power
forever and ever.
Amen."

~ 1 Peter 4:10 & 11 LAB

8
Bible Commentary:  "Some people well aware of their abilities, believe they have the right to use them as they please. Others feel they have no special talents at all. To both groups Peter addresses these verses. Everyone has some abilities, he says, find yours and use them. All our abilities should be dedicated to others, he points out none are for our own exclusive enjoyment."

Printable Issue 4919  Today is Thursday, July 27th, 2023; Karen's Korner #4919
Yesterday a friend emailed me something her friend had forwarded to her. "Do I get Sarah Young's "Jesus Calling:  Enjoying Peace in His Presence"?

Yes, I do. But I thought if both of those gals enjoyed it, maybe Karen's Korner readers would enjoy reading July 26th's too. I have copied and pasted it just like it was sent to me. Complete with a couple of her/their add-ons:

"Relax and let Me lead you through this day.  I have everything under control:  MY control.  You tend to peer anxiously into the day that is before you, trying to figure out what to do, and when.  Meanwhile the phone or the doorbell rings (for a text comes in) and you have to reshuffle your plans.

"All that planning ties you up in knots and distracts you from Me.  Attentiveness to Me is not only for your quiet time, but for all your time.  As you look to Me, I show you what to do NOW and NEXT.

"Vast quantities of time and energy are wasted in obsessive planning.  When you let Me direct your steps, you are set free to enjoy Me and to find what I have prepared for you this day."

Printable Issue 4920  Today is Monday, July 31st, 2023; Karen's Korner #4920
It was 24 years ago today that Merry was killed in a car/semi accident.

One of the reasons I started Karen's Korner was that, among other things, I wanted to remember some things surrounding that time. And wanted to share several of the final emails she had sent to us.

Here is Karen's Korner from Friday, April 11, 2003; Karen's Korner #30:

Today is Friday, April 11th, 2003; Karen's Korner #30

".....when Merry died..." (third in a series)

Merry's car accident was on Wednesday. The visitation at the funeral home was Sunday night. The funeral was on Monday morning.

Even though this was the most terrible thing I had ever experienced in my 50-plus years, I had chosen not to turn my back on God. I knew that this was going to be an impossibility for me to handle and I knew that I was going to get through it only with "extra special" help. I had 2 choices to be mad at Him, which would result in my turning my back on Light, which meant I would walk in darkness; or I could walk toward Him and His Love, which would result in illumination of my future path.

I told God I couldn't possibly make it without His Help. It was going to be too difficult.

I learned that if a person makes that kind of choice in the darkest of hours, God will speak within our thoughts, emotions, and spirits.

I can recall two thoughts which were too outstanding to be my own.

The first one was at the funeral home. Because of Merry's young age (26), her activity level and involvement in the lives of lots of people in several communities, and Clarion being our hometown for more years than the Welds can count, people came to the visitation for hours. Merry's husband, Ed, had let us know that he wanted to be last person to leave the funeral home. We wanted to honor and respect that request.

As I was leaving the funeral home, I reached out to touch the knob of the back door and this is the thought that God gave me: "You raised Merry, you educated her, you loved her, and you returned her to Me, what more could any mother want!"

The second thought, both of which I term profound in the midst of loss and grief, was as we were leaving the funeral services. The Weld family attended, and were all members of, the Methodist Church in Clarion for the growing up years of both Jamie and Merry. Jim and I began attending the Church of Christ, near the time of Merry's high school graduation. The funeral would have been at the Church of Christ, but there was a street replacement project on the north side of the church. Not nearly enough places for people to park.

The decision was made for the funeral services to be at the Methodist Church. More parking. Bigger sanctuary. Even though Ed and Merry were active in the church near Amana, Merry was still a member of the Clarion Methodist Church.

As we were dismissed to leave the church, the Eastern Iowa Brass Band was playing a final hymn. One of the band members was also a pallbearer, so we stood at the back of the church and waited for Steve to come down from the balcony where the band was playing.

Standing there, the Thought came, "When you and Jim carried Merry into this church for the first time, she wasn't perfect. (She was born with a birth defect and had already had shunt surgery by the time she was six weeks old.) And now her friends are carrying her out of the church. For the first time in her existence, she is perfect!"

And I knew that Merry was loved and cared for, because I was!

........and we drove to the cemetery.....

Printable Issue 4921  Today is Monday, July 31st, 2023; Karen's Korner #4921
Coming out of Sunday, here is one of the ten commandments:

Remember to observe the Sabbath
as a holy day.
Six days a week for your daily duties
and your regular work,
but the seventh day is
a day of Sabbath rest
before the Lord your God.
For in six days, the Lord made the heaven,
earth, and sea, and everything in them,
and rested the seventh day;
so he blessed
the Sabbath day a
nd set it aside for rest."

~ Exodus 20:8, 9 10b; 11 LAB

*
Bible Commentary:  "The Sabbath was a day set aside for rest and worship. God commanded a Sabbath because we need to spend unhurried time in worship and rest each week. A God who is concerned enough to provide a day each week for us to rest is indeed a wonderful God. To observe a regular time of rest and worship in our hurried world demonstrates the importance of God in our lives while having the extra benefit of refreshing our spirits."
