Today is Tuesday, June 24th, 2008; Karen's Korner #1342

This is a note from Val and Loren Neubauer, a couple who we have met when we drive around our old (classic?) cars on Motor Ioway. Even if you are not from Iowa, you know of the flood devastation. The Neubauers live in Cedar Rapdis, which was hard, hard hit. I heard yesterday that their refuse would fill two football fields, sixty feet deep!

Val is responding to yesterday's Karen's Korner about giving food to someone in need at the grocery store:

This "feel good" story reminds me of everything that is going on now in Cedar Rapids.  With this flood that has destroyed our downtown and left 6000 people homeless, people are pulling together. Everyone can do something even if it is just praying-which may account for the beautiful dry weather the Lord has blessed us with this past week.

Sometime this week or next our church will begin hosting volunteer teams of Presbyterians from all over the country.  We expect to have 50-70 volunteers a week well into fall.  As our pastor remarked from the pulpit on Sunday, "I sent Loren to a meeting in Iowa City.  Little did he know he would end up with a full time job."

So presently we are busy getting organized to be long term hosts.

Val
