Today is Wednesday, January 12th, 2011; Karen's Korner #1988

Today is the day one year ago that a devastating earthquake hit the country of Haiti; more than 230,000 people died and 1.3 million residents remain displaced.

Our local Catholic cluster (with church families in Belmond, Clarion, and Eagle Grove) are requesting that people pause for 35 seconds (length of time of the earthquake) at 3:53 p.m. today:  to ring bells, to pray, or for those moments of silence to remember.

People from these local churches have more than a casual interest in Haiti:  they adopted a community a number of years ago there; built a school in the town; and delegations have traveled Haiti multiple times to work and conduct medical clinics.

Mark your day planners for this afternoon at 3: 53 p.m. today!

 Answer me when I call to you,
   my righteous God.

Give me relief from my distress;
   have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
   and trust in the LORD.

Fill my heart with joy ...
    In peace I will lie down and sleep,
   for you alone, LORD,
   make me dwell in safety.

~ Psalm 4 (in part)
