Today is June 14; officially known as Flag Day in the United States.

It was during the beginning of the Revolutionary War that skirmishes in various places didn't not have a unified flag under which they fought. The Continental Congress in July 1775 passed legislation authorizing our first flag, consisting of 13 alternating red and white stripes and a field of blue, adding white stars representing each state in the union. The starry-fields changed over the years as each state was added to the union.

Bernard Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated across the country every June 14, in 1885. That year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson, officially established this day as Flag Day, to celebrate both the symbol and as a time to reflect on our FREEDOM.

You're a Grand Old Flag
By George Cohen

"You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag."
