Happy Labor Day!
Something written by Anne Graham Lotz and in my inbox yesterday:
A LIFE THAT WORKS
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." ~ Proverbs 14:12 NKJV
"The first seventeen verses of Genesis 9 are a direct quotation in God's own words giving principles for you and me and the entire human race to live by. If we want to live a life that works and the entire human race to live by. If we want to live a life that works, overcoming the weakness that resides in all of us, we must heed these principles. If we do not want to heed these principles, we have that freedom, but we will never live a life that works as it was created to work in the beginning. It would be similar to having a new computer with the most cutting edge technology, but using it only as a typewriter. It would do the job, but it wouldn't even come close to fulfilling the potential. If we do not heed God's principles for our lives, you and I can exist on this planet yet not even come close to fulfilling our potential or experiencing the abundant life God intended for us.
"One primary reason for the collapse of society all around us is due to indifference and outright rejection of God's principles. Our human weaknesses have become dominant, and life just does not work. So..........for your own good, read God's Word and live by God's principles and enjoy a life that works!"

This morning I was reading a handful of verses in Amos (Who reads Amos?). It is God talking to His People. Here's only one verse, plus commentary, which fits our caring for others. "I want to see a mighty flood of justice--- a torrent of doing good." ~ Amos 5:24 LAB * Bible Commentary: "Here are common excuses for not helping the poor (I can say I have thought of several of these myself at times!): 1) They don't deserve help. They got themselves into poverty, let them get themselves out; 2) God's call to help the poor applies to another time; 3) We don't have any people like this; 4) I have my own needs; 5) Any money I give will be wasted, stolen, or spent on other things. The poor will never see it; 6) I may become a victim myself; 7) I don't know where to start, and I don't have time; 8) My little bit won't make any difference. "Instead of making lame excuses, ask what can be done to help the poor. Does our church have programs that help the needy? Could we volunteer to work with a community group that fights poverty? As one individual, we may not be able to accomplish much, but join up with similarly motivated people and watch mountains begin to move." *****

My sister Jill sent me something she'd written about her granddaughter Carinna who is now four years old.
I wanted to share it with 'korner' readers:
A couple of weeks ago Carinna and I were driving somewhere. The question from her from the backseat was "Baba, do I have a grandpa?" I said ' yes, you have two. Grandpa Reggie that you sometimes talk to online and Grandpa Dave who lives in heaven. In the bonus room, there's a picture of me, him and your mommy.' Now some background. When Colleen was at her due date with Carinna, she was having back pains. I told her I thought she was having back labor and she should get to the hospital. I'd keep Raegan and call Reggie and have him meet her there. That was about 4 p.m. At midnight, Reggie called. Very emotional and couldn't really talk. Colleen wasn't in labor but the placenta disengaged from the uterus before Carinna was born. When that happens the doctors have about 5 minutes to get the baby out or they in effect drown in blood and die. Colleen remembers being on the gurney to the operating room with the anesthesiologist running alongside, starting to put her out. Carinna was born by an emergency C-section, and was so stressed that she had sucked the insides of her wrists so hard that they were scarred for the next three months. Her apgar score was 2 (scale of 1-10 with 10 being great) and she had to have blood suctioned from her nose, mouth, lungs and other spots. So, when talking about her Grandpa Dave, she piped up from the backseat. "Oh, Baba, I know him. He was with me when I was being born. He said - don't worry baby, everything's going to be alright.' I was surprised! I said, did he call you baby or Carinna? and she said "I didn't have a name then; he called me baby." Can a 4-year old make up a story like this? Maybe. But maybe just maybe this is how things work in heaven.

Sorry for the lateness of the Korner. Computer problems! An entry from Sarah Young and her “Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence” from several days ago. It talks about depending on Jesus. Not just for the big stuff but lots of things in our lives. I had a dental appointment that same day. I don’t always like going to the dentist sometimes I feel tensed up. That day I chose to focus on God and not on any potential ‘hurts’ of something the hygienist might poke and prod might make me feel.. It really gave my mind some rest.
"Living in dependence on Me is a glorious adventure. Most people scurry around busily, trying to accomplish things through their own strength and ability. Some succeed enormously; other fail miserably. But both groups miss what life is meant to be: living and working in collaboration with Me. “When you depend on Me continually, your whole perspective changes. You see miracles happening all around, while others see only natural occurrences and ‘coincidences.’ You begin each day with joyful expectation, watching to see what I will do. You accept weakness as a gift from Me, knowing that My Power plugs in most readily to consecrated weakness. You keep your plans tentative, knowing that My plans are far superior. You consciously live, move, and have your being in Me, desiring that I live in you. I in you, and you in Me. This is the intimate adventure I offer you.

Last night we started a four-week series at our church with the topic of "Self-Esteem"
We tend to have a problem with healthy self-esteem; either too high and too low. Our discussion centered a lot around low self-esteem. It seems to be a common problem in our culture. For us.
One line that stood out for me on our handout:
"God has determined our value based on His purpose for creating us in the first place and on the price He has paid to redeem us for all eternity." We are to remember that God loves us........and the Bible confirms it:
""Even if we were good. we really wouldn't expect anyone to die for us, though of course, that might be barely possible. But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." (Romans 5:7 - 8 LAB)
And there were five more verses: John 3:16; 1 John 3:1; 1 John 4:8 - 10; Romans 8:38 - 39 with similar actions of His Love for each of us.
Thank You, God, for Your Love and Care! Sometimes we forget!! Amen.

This is an email written by Max Lucado and in my inbox last week. I really liked it. We talk about being afraid of terrorist attacks. We don't talk too much about the 'terrorist attacks' going on inside of our heads by random thoughts. Some are pretty bizarre at times. Secret Sauce To Thought Management "The secret sauce for thought management is a genuine faith in the God of the Bible. Invite Jesus to change you by changing your thoughts.
"I embrace and cherish a Christian worldview. Namely, God made us, saves us, pastors us, and is coming back for us. The promise of heaven thrills me, and the assurance of God’s love sustains me.
"Thoughts. We cannot see them. We cannot always predict them. But we cannot deny this about them: They define our lives. Think well, live well. Think poorly, live poorly. It’s no wonder that God urges us to 'be careful how you think; (Proverbs 4:23). God loves us too much to let us lead a life marked by poor thinking. He made our brains. He can retrain our brains."

Heading in my Bible says: "Jesus teaches about criticizing others":
"Don't criticize, and then you won't be criticized. For others will treat you as you treat them." ~ Matthew 7:1 & 2 LAB
Bible Commentary: "Jesus tells us to examine our own lives instead of criticizing others. The traits that bother us in others are often the habits we dislike in ourselves. Our unbroken bad habits and behavior patterns are the very ones we most want to change in others. Do we find it easy to magnify others' faults while ignoring our own? If we are ready to criticize someone, we need to check to see if we deserve the same criticism. We need to judge ourselves first, and then lovingly forgive and help our neighbors."
*
Jesus, like everything else in our lives. We are going to need your help! First to see. And then to do!! Amen.

A prayer for us today from Stephanie Sample and her "365 Days of Prayer for Women":
LOVE NEVER ENDS "A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has gone by or like a watch in the night." ~ PSALM 90:4 NIV
"Lord, to comprehend all you have seen, all you have heard, all you have done---and that you remember it all---is too much. Your wisdom is infinite. Your love is eternal. I've watched the people in my life grow and change, and I say I've loved them 'forever', but you watch and love all of humanity all our lives. That's forever. When I realize I'll be there with you----where love never ends and where there is no time---I'm filled with wonder. I get to spend eternity with you; you designed it that way. I was made for you, and so eternity was made for me! It's so beautiful, Lord, so exciting. I can't wait to be with you and love you forever."
"Are we filled with wonder knowing that we will spend an eternity with Jesus?"

Have a great weekend! It is supposed to be in the 80s and 90s here in north central Iowa!!
A couple of sentences from Joyce Meyer's small book "Fight Like a Christian":
THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
"Ephesians 6:14 says to 'put on the breastplate of righteousness' (NKJV). "It's sad how many Christians walk around feeling like something is wrong with them For years, I was one of them. If I sinned, I would torment myself (sometimes for weeks!) by allowing myself to feel guilty and condemned.
"However, the Bible says we have been made right with God through Jesus' death on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). This means we can have the mindset that says, 'I am a child of God---He loves me, and I am forgiven.'"

i am known for my beautiful African violets. Normally, I have two perched on an small wooden table in my kitchen. I have divided them as they get too big and given away maybe 40 of them over the years.
As much as it needs to be done, I always hate how they look after the 'division'. I am told the 'shock' causes them to look terrible; very droopy leaves. The two 'new' ones looked terrible day afte day. For maybe a month. I did have to pull off a couple of the most limp leaves.
But now the two look perky. Smaller but ready to go and grow!
As I watched and waited for the improvement, hoping they would return to good 'looks,, I couldnet help but think of several stories in the Bible.
The children of Israel started to whine after God had successfully been led by God and Moses from their years of captivity in Egypt. No food. Not enough water! Then God provided it!!
Enemies of Jesus knew they had Him once He had been crucified and died! But God had other plans when Jesus was raised back to life!
How often do we 'wonder' or maybe 'worry' when things aren't going the way we would like, after we have been 'transplanted' in to a new situation?
We only need to look to God, keeping our eyes on Him, and waiting for 'things to change' :"And we know that all that happens to us is working for our good,if we love God and are fitting into his plans." (Romans 8:28 LAB)
Sometimes that is hard. Keep looking. Keep waiting. The 'transplanted' violets in my life are restored. We don't always know how. But God does! We need to keep looking!!

Paul writing in a letter to the people of Thessalonica:
"But we must forever give thanks to God for you, our brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose from the very first to give you salvation, cleansing you by the work of the Holy Spirit and by your trusting in the Truth. Through us he told you the Good news. Through us he called you to share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."
~ 2 Thessalonians 2:13 & 14 LAB
*
Bible Commentary: "God worked through Paul and his companions to tell the Good News and to call new believers to share in Christ's glory. It seems strange that God works through us---fallible, unfaithful, untrustworthy human creatures. But he has given us the fantastic privilege of accomplishing his great mission---telling the world how to find salvation."
* Thank You for trusting us so much to tell others about You. Help me, help us, to do a better job! Thank You for loving us, caring for us, and sending people into our lives to share Your Love and promises in this life and the one that is coming! Amen.

Something written by Max Lucado and in my computer inbox one day last week. His writings are always good. I really liked this one:
OPEN THE BOOK "I’ve listened to lesser voices. Locker-room know-it-alls. Godless teachers. Messed-up movie stars. Self-absorbed talk show hosts. They don’t know what they are talking about. I need an authoritative voice, an owner’s manual. And so do you.
"I played catcher in Little League baseball, Pony League baseball, and high school baseball. I noticed something: the width of home plate never changed. It was always seventeen inches wide. The width of the plate was permanent.
"So is the truth of God. It’s why Jesus said in John 8:31-32 (NIV), 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.' Healthy thinking happens as we submit to Scripture. Do you want to know God’s thoughts about anything? Open the book!"

Six times throughout the calendar, our minister leads us in a short-term study on some subject. Last night's was week #3 on the topic of 'Self-Esteem'.
I will give a snapshot of what we covered in the one-hour plus class.
"Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are", was our lead in quote by Marilyn Monroe. While she certainly had a troubled life, the sentence is probably true. We have a Biblical foundation on which to build each of our individual self-esteems.
We are created in God's image - Genesis 1:27 and James 3:9.
We have a 'divine stamp of value': 'As image-bearers of God. all humans possess a fundamental dignity that is separate from their achievements, possessions, or intelligence. This means a person's worth is intrinsic---it cannot be gained, lost or given by another person'.
Nothing can separate us from God's Love: 'Death can't and life can't. The angels won't, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God's love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, or where we are---high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean---nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when he died for us." (Romans 8:38 - 39) . And John 3:16 tells us of God's sacrificial love which affirm our worth.
And if we have self-worth, we need to be reminded to share that worth with others. Everyone has His self-worth as well. We can discover that self-worth by loving them and helping them. "Your attitude must be like, My Own (Jesus talking), for I the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many." (Romans 20:28).
While we know some of these, we often need to reflect on what God thinks about us. In case, we forget!!
We need to celebrate every day: I am loved. And so are you!! Thank You, Jesus!

This is today's Max Lucado in my email box. It comes from his book "Tame Your Thoughts".
We all have thoughts coming into our minds which are negative. Or outright lies. Some of us have more of them. Some of us have only a few. But we all have them at times. That is one thing I like about small groups and sharing. We are not alone, if we are honest!
UPROOT YOUR THOUGHTS
"Ephesians 4:23-24 (CEV) reads, 'Let the Spirit change your way of thinking and make you into a new person.' How? I have a three-word answer to that question: Uproot and Replant.
"Your mind is like a lawn. Your toxic thoughts are like grass burrs. They prompt a predictable chain reaction. These are untruths that lead to false narratives that result in overreactions. They stick and they hurt. They sour your mood and embitter your heart. You might mow them down. Give yourself pep talks. Read a book on positive mental attitude. And, for a day or two or ten, the weeds will disappear. But eventually they return.
"God has a better plan: Yank ‘em out by the roots. Your Father gives you his Word, and he invites you to treat the lies of hell with the words of heaven."

Today's "Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence"; by Sarah Young. It's a good one. But they all ten to be good!
"Walk with Me in the freedom of forgiveness. The Path we follow together is sometimes steep and slippery. If you carry a burden of guilt on your back, you are more likely to stumble and fall. As your request, I will remove the heavy load from you and bury it at the foot of the cross. When I unburden you, you are undeniably free! Stand up straight and tall in My Presence, so that no one can place more burdens on your back. Look into My Face and feel the warmth of My Love-Light shining upon you. It is this unconditional Love that frees you from both fears and sins. Spend time basking in the Light of My Presence. As you come to know Me more and more intimately, you grow increasingly free."
