Restacking magazines in and around the end table beside my recliner chair, I had the opportunity to thumb through my book "100 Things God Loves About You" by Tama Fortner.
I have used a number of these for 'korners' in the past, but I thought today might be a good one for a reminder of 'one way' God loves you, and me!
GOD LOVES TO CALL YOU HIS OWN
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" ~ 1 John 3:1
"God love you. More than just a little. More than a lot. He loves you........lavishly. His love is not the strings-attached love of this world. It is a love that stretches beyond the stars and reaches far into eternity. Just call His name, reach out to Him--------and His love will sweep into your life, scoop you up, and whisper softly over and over, 'You are Mine,'.........for you are His very own."

Our Sunday School class is beginning a study on what happened right after Jesus' death and resurrection. The disciples were charged with spreading Christ's message around the world.
Our memory verse for 5 of the weeks:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” ~ ACTS 1:8
The study focuses on the 'power' and the 'Holy Spirit', which we also posses as Christians. and the work continues today. We have the same direction. According to former area resident Dave Crozier, who recently passed away, here is our areas of influence: Jerusalem – our own family, friends, neighbors, church family; Judea – unknown people in our lives, people from around Iowa or our state of residence; Samaria – different races, ethnic groups, maybe less like you/us; ends of the earth – missionaries who accept the call, us wherever we might go outside of our normal travels.
Can I do better at that charge? Yes, making me aware is a good start. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit, like the disciples did.

Our Sunday School class is embarking on looking at what happened right after Jesus' death and resurrection. The title of the 10-week series is "The Church Begins".
Yesterday's class was "The Holy Spirit Comes".
I will have to admit I don't think a lot about the Holy Spirit. We tend not to talk about the his Spirit a lot. But we should. We enjoyed our discussion.
From some of our materials:
"The Bible teaches that everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ will be sealed with the same Holy Spirt Jesus promised to his apostles. The Holy Spirit is a guarantee to believers of the promised inheritance---that is, the glory of eternity with God in heaven. Every believer in Jesus Christ has the Holy Spirit living in him (her). (John 14:17)"
"We need to be mindful that the Holy Spirit IS the third person (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) and that He IS indwelling each one of us who has turned from sin and trusted in Christ."
* Thank You, Holy Spirit, for Your promises to each one of us as believers. Not because of anything we have done! You are a Caregiver, Love-provider, and All-in-All. Amen.

""Pray much for others; plead for God's mercy upon them; give thanks for all He is going to do for them. Pray in this way for kings and all others who are in authority over us, or are in place of high responsibility, so that we can live in peace and quietness, spending our time in godly living and thinking much about the Lord."
~ 1 Timothy 1:1 - 3 LAB
* Bible Commentary: "Although God is all-powerful and all-knowing, He has chosen to let us help Him change the world through our prayers. How this works is a mystery to us because of our limited understanding, but it is reality. Paul (writer) urges us to pray for each other and for our leaders in government. Our earnest prayers will have powerful results.
"Paul's command to pray for rulers was remarkable considering that Nero was emperor at this time. Nero was a notoriously cruel emperor. He needed a scapegoat for the great fire that destroyed much of Rome in A.D. 64, so to take the focus off himself he blamed the Roman Christians. Persecution erupted throughout the Roman Empire. Not only were Christians denied certain privileges in society, some were even publicly butchered, burned, or fed to animals. Social ostracism was widespread. When Paul wrote this letter, persecution was a growing threat to believers." **
God, we pray today for our leaders. We pray especially for President Donald Trump and his wife Melania; for Vice-president J.D. Vance and his wife Usha. We pray for former President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill; for former Vice-presidentor Kamala Harris and her husband Douglas . For the UK royalty including King Charles III and his family. We plead to You for your mercy upon each of them. We give thanks for all You are going to do for, and through, each of them. In Jesus, Name. Amen.

I have a couple of friends who are in a Bible study at a neighboring church. They are looking at a Max Lucado book. I am not sure about the whole study but this friend was telling about UFOs. No, not the kind we normally talk about.
"Untruths lead to False narratives which lead to Overreactions."
We all know what Max is talking about!
We hear the sirens go. Your 16-year-old isn't home. Even though you live in a town of 100,000, you become convinced it is him. Or you have a pain in your left side. It must be the latest disease for which there is no known cure!
And the list goes on. We don't need to learn of terrorist attacks when they are going on inside our heads!
Instead, we need to change the 'mental channel' in our minds to God and what He has for us in that time or situation.
"Trust the Lord completely, don't ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success."
~ Proverbs 3:5 & 6 LAB

Yesterday we buried Clarion's long-time attorney Rich Bordwell. He had retired and sold his law practice about two months ago. Plus he wasn't that old!
So big funeral! He was a Catholic. My friend Florine Swanson was the lector for the service and emailed me one of her short readings for the funeral.
Even if you have no idea who Rich Bordwell might be nor what the book from the Catholic Bible is, it is a good reading!
We all have friends!
A Reading from the book of the Prophet Sirach "Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter; whoever finds one finds a treasure. Faithful friends are beyond price; no amount can balance their worth. Faithful friends are life-saving medicine; Those who fear God will find them. Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship; For as they are, so will their neighbors be. The Word of the Lord"

Karen's Korner readers know that I am a Bible reader. I pick a book of the Bible; finish it and move on to another random pick.
I am in the process of finishing 1 Timothy. And, as so many times the case, the reading hits at a perfect time. Chapter 5 and these verses talk about 'pastors'. Right time to celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month: October!
"Pastors who do their work well should be paid well and should be highly appreciated, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching."
~ 1 Timothy 5:17 LAB
* Bible Commentary: "Faithful diligent church leaders should be supported and appreciated. Too often they are targets for criticism because the congregation has unrealistic expectations. How do we treat our church leaders? Do we enjoy finding fault, or do we show our appreciation? Do they receive enough financial support to allow them to live without worry and provide for the needs of their families? Jesus and Paul emphasized the importance of supporting ministers who lead and teach us."
** Thank You, God, for providing our churches with leadership. Thank You for people with hearts to serve You and people in their lives, congregations, and communities where each of them serve. Help us to be more supportive and less critical. May more people of all ages be attracted into the ministry and care of people everywhere. Thank You! Amen.

Taken from a recent writing by Max Lucado and his book "Tame Your Thoughts".
It's titled "Christ Runs the Show". We might not always like the way things are going. But we have two choices: let Christ run the show; or let us run the show. I choose to let (and believe) Christ 'runs the show'. He does a better job!
CHRIST RUNS THE SHOW
"'God raised Christ from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything.' (Ephesians 1:20-22 MSG).
"Christ runs the show. He has authority over the world, and he has authority over your world. Your date of birth, your date of death. Your mood swings, sleep patterns, eating habits, your salary. He’s never surprised, he’s never caught off guard. He’s never ever uttered the phrase, 'Now how did that happen?;
"Uproot your fear of pandemonium and replant the assuring promise: 'God makes everything work out according to his plan.' (Ephesians 1:11 NLT)."

Today's entry by Sarah Young and her "Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence":
"Try to stay conscious of Me as you go step by step through the day. My Presence with you is both a promise and a protection. My final statement just before I ascended into heaven was 'Surely I am with you always'. That promise was for all of My followers, without exception.
"The promise of My Presence is a powerful protection. As you journey through your life, there are numerous pitfalls along the way. Many voices clamor for your attention, enticing you to go their way. A few steps away from your true path are pits of self-pity and despair, plateaus of pride and self-will. If you take your eyes off Me and follow another's way, you are in grave danger. Even well-meaning friends can lead you astray if you let them usurp My place in your life. The way to stay on the path of Life is to keep your focus on Me. Awareness of My Presence is your best protection."

A couple of verses from I Timothy, written by Paul. He writes about 'being the greatest sinner'. In his past, he not only pursued Christians for their faith, he actively killed them. Pretty big sin, I'd say!
"Oh, how kind our Lord was, for He showed me how to trust Him and become full of the love of Christ Jesus. How true it is, and how I long that everyone should know it, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners---- and I was the greatest of them all."
~ 1 Timothy 1:14 & 15 LAB
* Bible Commentary: "When we become Christians, we often feel that our love for Jesus and others is inadequate. But we can be confident that Christ will give us the faith and love we need. Even with our week faith, we must demonstrate genuine love toward others. Christ will increase both our faith and love as our relationship with Him deepens.
"Paul summarizes the Good News. Jesus saves sinners, and no sinner is beyond His saving power. Do we believe that? Jesus didn't come just to show us how to live, or to challenge us to be better people. He came to offer us salvation that leads to eternal life. Have we accepted His offer? *****

Something in my computer inbox from several months ago by Max Lucado: FIND A WAY TO GIVE THANKS
"God notices the grateful heart. He took a praise-singing shepherd boy and made him a king. There’s no hint of God getting out of sorts if we aren’t thankful, but there is evidence we’re affected by our own ingratitude. What of the disastrous days? The nights I can’t sleep and the hours I can’t rest. Are we still grateful then?
"Jesus was. The Bible records, 'On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it' (1 Corinthians 11:23-24 NLT). It’s not often you see the words betrayed and thanks in the same sentence, much less in the same heart. In the midst of the darkest night of the human soul, Jesus found a way to give thanks. Anyone can thank God for the light. Jesus teaches us to thank God for the night. He says to us, 'you’ll get through this!; And we will."
*
Being thankful, even when I am not, is something I learned when our daughter Merry was sick before she died. From Thanksgiving until July1999, she needed surgery five times to repair her shunt. # 4 was July 8! We were called the evening of July 9. She was sick and was going to need surgery #5 the next day. Could we come back to the hospital? As I was gathering some things to go, I wasn't saying this prayer aloud, but rattling in my head, I was saying , "God, I don't want to do this!" And it seemed He said to me, "Tell Me thank you!"
Thank you!!?? "I don't want to do this!" And it seemed He said to me, "I never said you have to like it!"
Must be what it means in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which says, "Always be thankful." I started thanking God for doctors, surgeries, things that made Merry 'better'.
Something happens to us when we tell God, "Thank You", even for things we can't stand which happens to us! It improves our mental and spiritual health; maybe even our physical health! Some of my prayers are, "God, you know I don't like this one bit, but thank You for.........."

Don't do this often. I looked back to see what my 'Karen's Korner'' was 20 years ago today! Just think of that #655!
Here you go:
Today is Friday, October 21st, 2005; Karen's Korner #655 I hope that all of you have a great weekend. Here are a couple of short humorous thoughts, which some of you have shared with me, to take you into the weekend: ** James (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt." Concerned, James asked, "What happend to the flea?"
* ** Who has greater contentment, a man with seven children or a man with $7 million?
Answer: The man with seven children, because he doesn't want any more! (My apologies to several readers who have seven or more children!)
* ** The sermon I think this Mom will never forget: "Dear Lord," the minister begin with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. "without you, we are but dust." He would have continued but at that moment this very obedient daughter, leaned over to her mother and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice, "Mom, what is butt dust!?" * ** With hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another plus the big earthquake in Pakistan, the quote of the month comes from Jay Leno: "Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

"It is he who saved us and chose us for his holy work, not because we deserved it but because that was his plan long before the world began--- to show his love and kindness to us through Christ. And now he has made all of this plain to us by the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ, who broke the power of death and showed us the way of everlasting life through trusting him."
~ 1 Timothy 1:9 &10 LAB
* Bible Commentary: "This is a brief synopsis of the gospel. God loves us, chose us, and sent Christ to die for us. We can have eternal life through faith in him because he broke the power of death by his resurrection. We do not deserve to be saved, but God offers us salvation anyway. All we have to do is believe and accept his offer."

From today's "365 Days of Prayer for Women" by Stephanie Sample to take us into the weekend!
TOO MUCH
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
~ Matthew 11:29 ESV
"Precious Lord, how can you be so kind? I know your burdens are tremendous, you hold all we cannot carry. Yet you call to me, offering to take mine on too. How beautiful you are? Jesus, I admit I am weary.. My labor is long; my burden is heavy. Thank you, Lord, for your invitation. It's so like you to take my burden as your own. Thank you for your offer of rest. Where else could I find it, with so much to carry? Who else could I trust to watch over my load while I recover my strength, and in whom could I have faith to stir me when it's time to return? Only you, gracious Lord."
"What is too much for you right now that you could give to God?"

"What fools the nations are to rage against the Lord! How strange that men should try to plot against God! For a summit conference of the nations has been called to plot against the Lord and his Messiah, Christ the King. 'Come, let us break his chains,' they say, 'and free ourselves from all this slavery to God.' But God in heaven merely laughs! He is amused by all their puny plans. And then in fierce fury he rebukes them and fills them with fear." ~ Psalm 2:1 - 5 LB
**
Bible Commentary: People often think they will be free if they can get away from God. Yet we all inevitably serve somebody or something, whether a human king, the wishes of friends, or our own selfish desires. Just as a fish is not free when it leaves the water and a tree is not free when it leaves the soil, we ae not free when we leave the Lord. The one sure route to freedom is wholeheartedly serving God the Creator. He can set us free to be who He created us to be.
"God laughs, not at the nations, but at their confused thought about power. It is the kind of laughter which a father has with his preschool son who boasts of outrunning his father or conquering him in a wrestling match. The father knows the boundaries of power of his little boy and God knows the boundaries of power of the nations. If we must choose to put our confidence in God or the nations, choose God!!"

Today is "National First Responders Day"! A day to thank people who respond to all of us when things are going badly!
Some are paid for what they do! Police officers; people in our sheriffs' departments! Many others are not! Firefighters, especially in smaller communities! Those serving as emergency workers, riding in ambulances to be a 'first responder'!
* Lord, we thank You for people who are willing to serve us in this manner! As one first responder put it, 'We do it because of our hearts. We care!' Thank You for each and every one of them! Amen.
* Okay, this is your assignment for today: We have cell phone numbers, we have ability to email lots of people, we can text others. So contact one person to tell them 'thank you'! So just do it!!!

Today's email from Max Lucado:
What Do We Do With Pain?
"We all have pain. Some sufferings we deserve, but many we do not. Deformities? Death of a child? Wartime atrocities? What do you do with these? Why are some people bitter, angry, and harsh, while others are tender, receptive, and kind?
"Much of the answer is found in their response to pain. Scripture makes three clear statements about affliction. First, there is no pain-free option. 'In the world you will have tribulation,' Jesus said. (John 16:33 ESV). Second, everyone does something with their pain. Numb it. Obsess over it. Run from it. But thirdly, pain displays God’s glory. We exist to make a big deal out of God. Regarding humanity, God declares, 'I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them' (Isaiah 43:7 NLT).
"And nothing glorifies God greater than faith in the midst of suffering."

A short Bible verse from Psalms. Sometimes the hardest relationships to maintain are those closest to us!
"I will try to walk a blameless path, but how I need your help, especially in my own home, where I long to act as I should."
~ Psalm 101: 2 LAB
* Bible Commentary: "Close relationships have much potential for conflict. Our homes can be difficult places in which to live godly lives. Our families usually see us at our worst because we relax and let down our masks of good behavior. Often we do not treat our family members with the same respect and kindness we show to friends and business associates. David (writer) must have experienced this difficulty as he cried to God for help. Since we should want to treat those who are closest to us well, and since we want our lives to be Christian examples for them, pray that God will help you live a blameless life at home."
**
Help us, Father God! Like everything in our lives, we need Your help! Amen.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Something from Sarah Young and her "Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence". Not today's; tomorrow's! Since we don't have a weekend Karen's Korner:
"Do not be discouraged by the difficulty of keeping your focus on Me. I know that your heart's desire is to be aware of My Presence continually. This is a lofty goal; you aim toward it but never fully achieve it in this life. Don't let feelings of failure weigh you down. Instead, try to see yourself as I see you. First of all, I am delighted by your deep desire to walk closely with Me through your life. I am pleased each time you initiate communication with Me. In addition, I notice the progress you have made since you first resolved to live in My Presence.
"When you realize that your mind has wandered away from Me, don't be alarmed or surprised. You live in a world that has been rigged to distract you. Each time you plow your way through the massive distractions to communicate with Me, you achieve a victory. Rejoice in these tiny triumphs, and they will increasingly light up your day."
